The Andromeda Galaxy with its satellites M32 and M110 and crimson Hα nebulae in its arms

Andromeda Galaxy

M31 / NGC 224 · Spiral galaxy in Andromeda · ~2.5 million ly

The nearest major spiral to our own Milky Way, home to some one trillion stars. Its arms sweep past two bright satellite galaxies — M32 and M110 — and are laced with crimson knots of hydrogen, stellar nurseries glowing in Hα. Andromeda is drifting toward us; in a few billion years the two galaxies will collide and merge into one.
