Pillars of Creation
M16 / IC 4703 · Eagle Nebula in Serpens · ~5,700 ly
These towering columns of cold gas and dust, the tallest about 4 light-years high, sit at the heart of the Eagle Nebula. Ultraviolet light from the nearby young cluster NGC 6611 is slowly eroding them away, while dense knots at their tips shelter newborn stars. First made famous by Hubble in 1995, they remain one of the most iconic sights in astronomy.
