Cosmic Keyhole
NGC 1999 · Reflection nebula in Orion · ~1,500 ly
A bright reflection nebula lit by the young variable star V380 Orionis, set just south of the Great Orion Nebula. Its most striking feature is the inky “keyhole” at its heart — long thought to be a dense knot of dust, but now believed to be an actual hole punched clean through the nebula by jets from nearby protostars.
